World Symposium on Sustainable Tourism (WSST 2025)

University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil

In recent decades, tourism has experienced unprecedented growth, emerging as one of the world's largest and fastest-growing industries. While this growth has brought numerous benefits, it has also raised significant concerns about its environmental, social, and cultural impacts. Traditional tourism practices often contribute to environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, exploitation of natural resources, and cultural commodification. Moreover, communities in popular tourist destinations frequently face challenges such as overcrowding, pollution, loss of traditional livelihoods, and cultural erosion.

In response to these challenges, sustainable tourism has gained traction as a viable alternative to conventional tourism models. Sustainable tourism, also known as responsible tourism or eco-tourism, seeks to minimize tourism's negative impacts while maximizing its benefits for host communities, the environment, and future generations. At its core, sustainable tourism aims to strike a balance between economic growth, environmental conservation, and socio-cultural preservation.

As awareness of sustainability issues continues to grow, there is a growing momentum within the tourism industry to embrace sustainable practices and initiatives. Governments, businesses, non-profit organizations, and civil society actors are increasingly recognizing the importance of integrating sustainability into tourism planning, development, and management processes.

Against this background and in order to cater to a wide discussion on sustainability aspects in tourism, the “World Symposium on Sustainable Tourism (WSST)” is being organised by:

With cooperation with:

The symposium serves as a timely and essential event for stakeholders to come together, share knowledge, and chart a course towards a more sustainable future for tourism. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and collective action, WSST aims to catalyse positive change within the tourism industry, ensuring that tourism remains a force for good for both people and the planet.

Publishing Opportunities:

As an output of the Symposium, Participants who wish to submit a paper will be invited to contribute to an edited volume entitled "Forecasting Sustainable Tourism: Challenges, Strategies and Innovations." This book will be aimed at a wide readership, notably those on the front line of sustainability efforts at universities and companies, along with policymakers, researchers, and students.
The book will be a further volume of the award-winning “World Sustainability Series” (https://www.springer.com/series/13384) published by Springer. Since its creation in 2008, it has become the world’s leading book series on sustainable development. The editors' decision as to which papers may be selected and undergo peer review for the book is final.

2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region

University Nilton Lins, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil

The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), a pivotal event in the global fight against climate change, will be held in the heart of the Amazon rainforest in 2025. This historic decision underscores the urgency of addressing environmental issues directly within one of the world's most vital ecosystems. The Amazon will provide a fitting backdrop for international leaders to convene and formulate strategies aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Deforestation is a major problem in the Amazon region as a whole, and in Brazil in particular. To date, nearly 800,000km² of Brazil’s original 4 million km² of Amazon forest has been depleted due to a variety of economic activities. These include uncontrolled logging, large-scale farming, mining, large road construction project and dams, among others. Together, these activities have raised serious concerns about the stability of the Amazon rainforests, some of which has already been converted into drier savannahs known as cerrado.

There is a need to discuss not only the causes but also the possible solutions to the problems the Amazon region is facing today, and to identify sustainable solutions. Against this backdrop, and as COP30 offers a unique opportunity to bring global attention to the Amazon's challenges, the 2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region is being organized by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Programme (IUSDRP), the International Climate Change Information and Research Programme (ICCIRP), Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and the University Nilton Lins (Brazil), in collaboration with various organisations, including the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUCPR). The event is also organized by the German-Brazilian Science and Technology Network (GERBRAS-SCIENCENET).

The first edition of this Symposium was held at the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), Santarém, Brazil, on 4-5 September 2023. This event, the “2nd Symposium Amazon 2030 – Sustainability Issues in the World's Largest Rainforest Region”, will be held in the University Nilton Lins, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, on 6-7 November 2025. The dates make it convenient for delegates interested in joining COP30 (10-21 November) after the Symposium.

The Symposium has the following objectives:

i. to disseminate information on ongoing research projects and practical projects in the field of climate change, environmental conservation and sustainability taking place in the Amazon region;
ii. to present innovative approaches in teaching and research focusing on the Amazon rainforests;
iii. to facilitate the exchange of experience and information between researchers from universities, but also from research centres, NGOs, companies and other institutions;
iv. to provide opportunities for further networking and contact building.
The Symposium will present state-of-the-art projects and initiatives in the nexus Amazon rainforests and sustainability, as well as innovative teaching and research approaches. In particular, projects that are "cross-sectoral" and innovative and serve as examples of inter-institutional cooperation will be presented at the Symposium.

The deadlines are as follows:
-Final deadline for submission of abstracts: 30th May 2025
-Deadline for registrations: 30th July 2025
-Deadline for the submission of papers: 30th November 2025
